There is a case for this element, and it is narrow enough to state exactly. Competition accepts trades that road riding does not, and the plainest of them concerns engine life. A racing engine is opened on a schedule, measured and rebuilt, so the slow wear fine airborne dust causes over tens of thousands of kilometres falls outside the horizon it is run to. That is the context the Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 was made for: filtration at 85 microns, coarser than the standard P08's 80, in return for 15,000 l/m²/sec of airflow against 5,050. Judged as a road part that is a step backwards. Judged as a race part it is headroom bought in a currency racing spends anyway.
Key Features
- Racing polyester, used dry: 85 microns, 15,000 l/m²/sec
- About three times the standard P08's flow, paid for with a weave coarser than its 80 microns
- Compressed air between sessions brings it back to its starting condition
- No oil at any point — no procedure to follow, nothing to reach the sensors
- Fits the standard airbox unmodified, with no remap
- Washable and reusable; two years of warranty from purchase
The currency racing is willing to spend
On a competition machine every choice is measured against a rebuild interval rather than a lifetime, and that changes which risks are worth taking. Coarser filtration costs wear on a timescale the engine will not be asked to reach. What it buys is intake resistance that is low and, more usefully, unchanged from the first lap of a session to the last — a value the machine can be set up around because it does not drift. Restoring it takes a line of compressed air and no consumable — nothing to buy between sessions, nothing that has to dry first.
Why an ordinary Y15ZR/LC150 is not that machine
A motorcycle kept for years and passed on to a second owner runs to the opposite plan. The engine is expected to last without being opened, so its wear is being avoided rather than budgeted for, and every micron the racing weave gives up is charged against that account. The airflow it hands back goes unused, because an element inside a standard airbox was never what limited a 150 cc single. PM186S F1-85 is the right part when the season is the unit of measurement. Where the unit is the decade, the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 is the balance point, and the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800 is the answer when dust rather than flow governs.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, is the service. Where more is called for, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will do it — rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it fully in open air, never with heat and never with a flame, and refit it dry. Nothing is oiled afterwards. The maintenance sheet is found under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Y15ZR/LC150, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same element is listed for six model names across that period; the list is in the Fitment tab.
