Four media are catalogued for this one airbox, and their apertures read 7, 14, 80 and 85 microns. The two ends stand a factor of twelve apart, and the Valico 300DS is the only one of the three machines on this housing that appears at both: the 7 µm T12 for extreme conditions, and this one, the 85 µm racing weave. Ordering SM257S F1-85 for a Valico is therefore a deliberate move to the open end of a ladder whose other end was also built for this bike.
Key Features
- The coarsest of the four media catalogued for this airbox, at 85 µm
- Rated flow of 15,000 l/m²/sec, about three times the road element in the same housing
- Dry single-layer polyester, oil-free by design, with retention measured at 95.22 per cent on 100-micron particles
- Around twice as much cloth as other performance elements bring to the same box
- Goes in where the paper panel came out; airbox untouched, mapping unchanged
- Serviced with compressed air again and again instead of replaced; two years of warranty
A ladder with very few rungs
There is no fine gradation to be had here. Between 14 and 80 microns the catalogue offers nothing at all for this housing, which makes the decision coarse by construction: you are not tuning a filter, you are picking one of four answers. The flow figures step in the same way — 560, 1,800, 5,050 and 15,000 l/m²/sec — and finer always means less through. Nothing on that ladder outranks anything else on it. A T12 is not a poor racing filter; it was built for air this element was never meant to meet.
Choosing the open end for a DS
The machine's own listing is the argument against, and it deserves stating rather than hiding. Whoever specified the T12 for the Valico and for neither of its two stablemates expected this model to meet dirt the others would not. A weave of 85 µm flowing 15,000 l/m²/sec is the opposite specification: it suits a bike that lives on surfaced roads and sees the top of the rev range, and suits one far less that spends its days behind other traffic on gravel. The usual honesty applies as well. No drop-in element makes a standard Valico 300DS noticeably stronger. What changes is the resistance the filter contributes, and whether that resistance can be reset.
Care and cleaning
Servicing replaces buying. Compressed air from the clean face outward is the standard interval, so the load leaves along its entry path instead of being driven through. Where it has turned damp and stubborn, lukewarm water with a mild detergent releases it, and the element is rinsed until the water comes off clear. Drying then needs moving air at room temperature and patience — no radiator, no hot air gun, no flame — before the panel is refitted dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the Voge Valico 300DS as listed for 2020 and 2021, replacing the standard paper panel directly. Three Voge machines share this racing element. The complete list is in the Fitment tab.
