Almost everything in a parts catalogue claims to improve on the thing it replaces. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 does not, and saying so first is the only honest way to describe it. Against the standard P08 it gives filtration away: 85 microns of maximum aperture instead of 80. What it hands back is air on another scale — 15,000 litres per square metre per second against 5,050. On a 2016–2017 Speed Triple R, a 1050 triple with genuine appetite at the top of the rev range, that trade is worth examining rather than waving through.
Key Features
- Dry racing polyester rated at 85 microns of maximum aperture, oiled at no point in its life
- Airflow rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec, close to three times the 5,050 of the standard P08
- Retention measured at 95.22 % on 100-micron particles against 93.13 % for the P08 — the ground given up is finer than that
- Media area on the order of twice what a conventional performance element carries
- Sits in the untouched standard airbox: nothing to cut, nothing to reflash
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted; built to last the life of the bike, guaranteed for two years from purchase
A step backwards, taken on purpose
Five microns sounds like a rounding error and is not one. A weave holds back what cannot pass through it, so every micron of retention is bought with restriction, and every litre of flow is bought with retention. That is a trade, not a league table: the P14 sits at the far end of the same line at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec, no better a filter, only one drawn for dust. The F1-85 was placed at the coarse end deliberately, because competition values something above retention — a resistance that starts low and stays close to where it started as the medium loads.
The condition that comes with it
An engine run on this medium is one taken apart on a schedule counted in running hours, refreshed long before the finer fraction can show up as wear on bores and rings. If your R is looked after that way — track days in the log, an hour count someone keeps, an engine you are prepared to open — the coarser weave costs nothing you were not going to renew anyway. If it is a road bike on a mileage-based service plan, expected to reach six figures on its original bores, the standard P08 at 80 microns keeps the guard tighter for a far smaller flow gain.
Care and cleaning
Service means compressed air. Point it at the clean face so the dirt is pushed back out through the side it entered, not deeper in. Water and a little mild washing-up liquid deal with what the air leaves behind. Keep heat guns and flames away from it: let it dry in still air and refit it dry. Order it under PM193S F1-85; the full maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
This listing is the Triumph Speed Triple R built for 2016 and 2017. The same element covers three machines from the 1050 family: the Speed Triple R (2016–2017), the Speed Triple RS (2018–2020) and the Speed Triple S (2016–2020). Check the model year on your papers: the earlier 1050 Speed Triple takes a different element.
