A large-capacity scrambler spends a surprising amount of its life stationary in traffic. The styling suggests dirt roads; the reality for most owners is a city, and a city means long periods at low speed with a 1187 cc V-twin making heat directly underneath the rider and almost no airflow to carry it away. That is a specific and rather demanding environment for everything in the engine bay, and the intake tract is part of it.

Heat without airflow

Moving air is what normally keeps under-tank temperatures within a comfortable range. Take the movement away and the whole area soaks. This is the condition in which oiled filters are at their least appealing: warm oil is thin oil, thin oil migrates readily in the airflow that does exist, and what it migrates onto is the hot-film air mass sensor, where a coating reads as less air than is genuinely passing. The engine management then trims fuel against a number that is wrong, and it will not tell you it is doing so. The P08 CM170S has no oil in it, so there is nothing available to move.

City air is dirtier than it looks

The other half of urban use is what is actually in the air: brake dust, tyre particulate, and the fine grit that lives in the slipstream of traffic. It is less visible than a gravel road but it arrives continuously, and it arrives in proportion to how long the engine runs rather than how far the motorcycle travels. Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements means the same quantity produces a smaller rise in restriction, and compressed air from the clean side puts the element back where it started rather than sending it to a bin.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame.
