The Limit of the Range

Spark makes nothing larger and nothing sharper. Above this size and beyond this angle the tooling, the material and the application all run out at once — motorcycles simply do not need a three-inch right angle very often.

When one is needed it is usually a chamber or a box turning around a structural member, and the alternative is a segmented pie-cut with six welds in it.

Why the Wall Is Thickest Here

Two reasons at once. A large panel drums, and a millimetre and a half raises its natural frequency enough to damp it. And a right angle at this diameter is the most severe forming operation in the range — the extra material is what lets the inner heel compress without folding.

The Space It Takes

With tangents, something over two hundred millimetres in each direction. Before ordering, cut the shape from cardboard and hold it where it is meant to go. It is a five-minute check against a part that cannot be shortened in any useful way.

Bore Consistency Matters More Than Flow

In a chamber or a box, the point of a mandrel-formed bend is not the pressure drop — it is that the bore is the same all the way round, so a perforated core or an inner sleeve can be pushed through it. Through a segmented bend, it cannot.

Welding at 1.5 mm

The most forgiving joint in the range. There is enough parent metal to bridge a small root gap without the edge falling away, which is fortunate: this is also the most expensive article here to replace.

Two Hands, Clear Bench

Large, thin relative to its diameter, and permanently marked by a dropped spanner. Clear the bench before it comes out of the box, and put nothing else on it while the part is there.
