DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 68031-40 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4 N/mm, 500 mm long with a 21 mm inner diameter. A fork that is sprung wrong uses up its travel before the damping has a chance to work.
Key Features
- Free length 500 mm
- Measured spring rate 4 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 68031-40
- Inner diameter 21 mm
- Supplied as a pair
How Öhlins Makes Them
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
Size and Rate
Dimensionally this is a 21 mm × 500 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 4 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
Öhlins goes this soft only where the linkage ratio or the rider weight genuinely calls for it. Expect more sag and more movement — that is the point, not a fault. If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
What Fitting Involves
Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
