DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two kilograms saved on an A2 motorcycle, with the type approval intact and no remap needed. That combination is why this silencer sells: a CB500X owner can fit it on a Saturday morning and ride to work on Monday with nothing to explain to anyone.
Key Features
- 2.1 kg, almost exactly half the standard silencer's 4.1
- EC and ECE type approval, plus a US EPA approval
- Carbon fibre sleeve and end cap on a stainless steel link pipe
- 44.4 PS, with 0.8 Nm more at 4,600 rpm
- Plug and play in three quarters of an hour, no remapping
- Five model names covered by one part
Five Names, One Platform
Honda's 471 cc parallel twin carried the naked CB500F, the adventure-styled CB500X and the faired CBR500R, with 399 cc CB400X and CBR400R versions for markets with a licence class at that capacity. All of them share the exhaust, so one silencer covers the set from 2016 to 2019.
Honda revised the range for 2020 and again more recently; those machines take a different part number.
A2 Riders and Type Approval
These are the motorcycles people ride on a restricted licence, often as a first bike and often to work. A type-approved silencer matters more here than it does on a track machine — an insurance claim or a roadside check should not turn on what exhaust is fitted.
EC and ECE approval means no entry in the German vehicle documents. It is a type approval and not an ABE, and the certificate ships with the part.
What Two Kilograms Does on a 190 kg Bike
Honda's silencer weighs 4.1 kg, which is a lot on a machine this size. Halving it takes just over one per cent off the total weight, all of it high and behind the rider.
The honest description is that it makes the bike feel a little more willing to change direction, not that it transforms it. Anyone promising more than that is selling something else.
The Power Figures Are Small and Real
43.9 PS to 44.4, and 42.8 Nm to 43.5, with the gains recorded at 7,450 and 4,600 rpm. On a 47 PS-class twin that is under two per cent. Akrapovic states the numbers plainly and so does this page.
The 0.8 Nm at 4,600 rpm is the one a commuter notices, because that is where a 500 twin pulls away from a junction.
A Note From the Manufacturer
Akrapovic adds that this product was developed and tested on a motorcycle with EU specifications, and that fitment and performance may vary in other markets. For a bike sold in Germany that is not a concern; for a grey import it is worth reading twice.
Carbon on a Commuter
The sleeve and end cap are carbon fibre, with a stainless steel link pipe and inner structure doing the structural work. Carbon stays black and does not take a heat colour, which suits a motorcycle that gets washed rather than polished.
Road Approval
EC and ECE type approved, plus a US EPA approval. No entry in the vehicle documents is required and no remapping is needed.
