DescriptionThe whole story▼
Six models on one part number, and it is road legal. Yamaha's 847 cc CP3 triple powered the MT-09, the FZ-09, the MT-09 SP, the Tracer 900, the FJ-09 and the XSR900 between 2014 and 2021 — and this complete system covers all of them with an EC type approval.
Key Features
- EC type approval, valid only with the catalytic converter installed
- Complete system covering six model names
- Titanium muffler outer sleeve with a carbon fibre end cap
- 6.38 kg fitted against 8.42 kg standard
- Reaches 112.3 PS, with 6.7 PS more measured at 10,100 rpm
- Also fits the MT-09 SP
- Forty-five minutes of work
Legal, and That Is the Point
Akrapovic also builds the S-Y9R2-AFC Racing Line for the same machines. That one is lighter and louder and has no road approval at all.
This is the version for an owner who rides on public roads and wants the paperwork to be right. It gives up some of the weight saving to keep the catalytic converter, and that trade is the whole difference between the two.
Six Names, One Engine
The MT-09 is the naked roadster, the FZ-09 its American name, the SP the version with Öhlins suspension, the Tracer 900 and FJ-09 the sports tourers and the XSR900 the retro. Six motorcycles that look nothing alike, one exhaust route.
For anyone shopping second-hand across that range, a system that moves between them is worth knowing about.
Forty-Five Minutes
Short for a complete system, and the reason is the triple's layout: three header pipes reachable from below without dismantling the front of the motorcycle. On a Tracer with its fairing there is a little more to remove first.
The Condition
Akrapovic states the EC type approval is valid only when the catalytic converter is installed. Leave the exhaust as delivered and the approval holds; take the converter out and it does not.
Eight Model Years
Yamaha kept this exhaust route from the 2014 MT-09 through to the last 847 cc machines in 2021. The 890 cc bikes from 2021 onwards take a different system entirely — check the year in the registration document rather than the model name.
Two Kilograms
2.04 kg saved is modest next to the open Racing Line for the same machine, and that is the point: the catalytic converter stays, so it keeps its weight. What you buy instead is an exhaust you can ride on the road without a second thought.
Also the MT-09 SP
Akrapovic states explicitly that the exhaust also mounts on the MT-09 SP — the version with Öhlins rear suspension and different bodywork. Worth naming, because the SP is often excluded from accessory fitment lists.
Road Approval
EC type approval, valid only with the catalytic converter installed.
