Almost everything bought for a motorcycle is bought for the way it is ridden now. An air filter built to last the life of the machine is not. A decision with a long shadow

Consumables let you change your mind every service. This element does not ask to be replaced, so whichever medium goes in stays in, and the specification you pick today is quietly the specification of the next several years of riding. That is an argument for choosing on the basis of where the bike is heading rather than where it has been. A Tiger Sport bought for commuting tends to acquire luggage, then longer trips, then a different set of roads entirely.

The trade you are locking in

An open weave passes more air and holds back less of the fine fraction; a finer medium does the reverse. Neither is the better filter, they are answers to different air, and this one answers air that is clean and fast rather than dusty and slow. Be clear about what is not in the deal: a drop-in element does not make a series Tiger Sport 660 noticeably faster. It lowers the intake's share of the restriction and, more usefully, keeps it there between cleans.

Care and cleaning

The SM223S F1-85 is maintained with compressed air played over the clean side and blown outwards. After a dirty season, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in open air — never with heat, never over a flame — before refitting it dry.
