Spark stocks 42 as well, and the reason is that original-equipment exhausts do not confine themselves to round numbers. A factory system measured at forty-two is not unusual, and matching it exactly is easier than adapting to a size that is close.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo millimetres of diameter is about ten per cent of flow area. That means a 40 mm tube slides straight into it — no expanding, no swaging, no machining.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the neatest slip joint available in Spark's range and it is the reason to keep a length of 42 in the rack even on a project built around 40 mm tube. A band clamp is quicker; a pair of springs is what Spark uses on its own systems, because a sprung joint allows the thermal movement that a rigid clamp fights.
