An SV650 in Different Clothes
Suzuki restyled the SV650 as the Gladius with a trellis frame and softer lines. The engine and much of the chassis carried straight over.
The Same Ninety Degree Twin
Six hundred and forty-five cubic centimetres with the character that has kept this engine alive for three decades. It is the reason the Gladius is worth owning.
A Cheap Project Base
The Gladius never sold as well as the SV650 it came from, and values reflect that. It is an inexpensive route into a very good engine.
Why the Stand Comes Off
Track conversions and custom builds both remove it, either for weight or because it fouls something new. Its switch is on the bracket and leaves too.
The Consequence
An open circuit reads as a deployed stand and the engine cuts in gear. Nothing else on the build can be tested until this is fixed.
Restoring the Signal
The eliminator closes the loop as the ECU expects. No warning appears and nothing is stored in the background.
Seven Model Years
The fitment covers 2009 to 2015. Suzuki dropped the Gladius name afterwards and returned to calling the bike an SV650.
Nothing Cut
Suzuki's own connector. The switch refits with the stand whenever the motorcycle returns to the road.
Keep It on a Street Bike
With a stand still fitted, the interlock prevents a specific low-speed accident. It should stay connected.
A Styling Experiment
The Gladius was aimed at riders who found the SV650 too plain, with pastel colours and organic shapes that dated quickly. Underneath the presentation sat one of the best middleweight engines anybody has built, which is why the bikes are still worth buying.
