DescriptionThe whole story

Riding an MT-09 SP hard means using the front brake harder than the riding position suggests. ZCOO's shape here is the S001: 50.5 mm tall, 69.5 mm long, 8.8 mm deep. On the Yamaha MT-09 SP the S001 is now available in EXR, the compound that carries ZCOO's endurance programme.

Key Features

  • Low noise and low rotor scoring, which on an MT-09 SP means the discs outlast several sets of pads
  • No bedding-in ritual: the S001 reaches its working friction level within the first few stops
  • New backing plate alloy, specified with the compound instead of carried over from the EXC Endurance mixture EXR replaces
  • Sized for the braking energy a 847 cc machine generates, not scaled down from a larger reference
  • Machined, not moulded: the S001 plate is cut to the Sumitomo outline rather than pressed to an approximate one
  • Resists glazing under sustained pressure, which is what ends most organic pads on an MT-09 SP

Construction and Material Quality

The S001 shares its construction with the pads ZCOO supplies to endurance teams. On a 69.5 by 50.5 mm face the backing plate decides whether the pad wears evenly or takes on a taper. That is why the S001 holds a consistent contact patch deep into its service life.

Performance and Feel

EXR was mixed for riders who found EX Race short on authority on a machine like the Yamaha MT-09 SP. On the Yamaha MT-09 SP the twenty percent shows up as a braking marker that can move rather than one that has to. A grabby pad on a short-wheelbase MT-09 SP is not merely uncomfortable - it is destabilising.

Fitment and Compatibility

For the MT-09 SP of 2018 to 2023 the S001 is the shape ZCOO lists. Before ordering, check that your caliper takes a pad of 69.5 mm length and 50.5 mm height. The S001 is a front pad only. The same S001 shape covers 27 further machines in the 2026 catalogue.

Road Approval

No ECE R90 type approval is documented for this pad. It appears neither in ZCOO's own catalogue nor on the European distributor's site, and no approval number is printed on the packaging data available to us. ZCOO itself describes the compound as suited to competition machines and road machines alike, but that is a description of the mixture, not a type approval. Until the distributor confirms an approval in writing, treat this as a track and competition part: in Germany a replacement brake pad without ECE R90 approval may not be fitted to a motorcycle used on public roads. Ask us before ordering if you need this clarified for your machine.
