Of the five machines built around this airbox, the EX650 Ninja is the one that shows up on entry lists. Its parallel twin is the basis of club twin-cylinder classes in most countries, and that is the setting a racing filter medium was made for. It also comes with a condition that is easy to read past. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 flows 15,000 l/m²/sec through an 85 micron weave; the standard P08 flows 5,050 through 80 microns. The extra flow is real, and it is paid for with a coarser mesh. That is a reasonable bargain on an engine which is opened on an hour count and inspected between seasons. It is a poor one on an engine nobody intends to open at all.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester in racing specification — 85 microns, 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Set against the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec: the flow is bought with filtration
- Twice the filtering surface of other performance filters, or close to it
- No oil by design, so nothing can travel downstream onto the air sensor or the throttle bodies
- The standard airbox takes it without modification and without a remap
- Serviced with compressed air and used again; two years of warranty from the date of purchase
The condition attached to 85 microns
Race engines are maintained by running hours. Under that regime a slightly coarser intake filter changes very little, because whatever wear it might contribute is taken out by an overhaul that was scheduled anyway. A road-going EX650 is maintained by kilometres and by optimism: the bottom end is expected to last untouched. Five microns is not a dramatic difference, but the direction is — this element hands back a small part of the protection the standard medium gives you, in return for headroom. Decide first how the engine will be looked after, and let that answer choose the medium. If the honest answer is that it will simply be ridden, buy the P08.
What the extra flow can and cannot do
A filter can only give back the restriction it caused itself, and on a standard EX650 with standard exhaust and mapping that share is small. The F1-85 earns its place further along, where the intake and exhaust have already been opened up and the airbox has become the remaining term in the sum. What a race weekend actually rewards is repeatability: the same restriction on Sunday afternoon as on Saturday morning. A polyester element blown clean between sessions delivers that; a loading paper element does not.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side, blown outwards, is the normal service for the PM163S F1-85. A wash is the next step up: lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Let it dry right through in open air, never with heat and never over a flame, then refit it dry. Oil plays no part in any of it. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki EX650 Ninja, 2017 to 2026. The same element fits five machines built around this airbox, across the Ninja, Z650, Versys and Vulcan families; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
