The Milano was the V7 III for riders who treat a gravel track as a route rather than a mistake — wire wheels, a wider bar, a tank range that suggests going somewhere. That changes the airbox's job description. Instead of the slow, even diet of city air, it gets an afternoon's worth of fine mineral dust in a couple of hours. The instinctive response is a filter that holds more by being sticky. The Sprint Filter P08 PM138S takes the opposite route, and the reasoning is worth following.
Key Features
- Contains no oil whatsoever, so nothing can be carried downstream by the airflow
- Woven polyester rated at 80 microns; Sprint Filter measure 93.13 % retention at 100
- Around twice the area of a conventional performance element — dust has further to go
- Drops into the series airbox with no cutting, no adapter and no reflash
- Air-cleaned at the end of a dusty day; washable when the day was worse than that
- Two years of warranty cover, running from the date of sale
The case against the sticky answer
An oiled cotton gauze does trap dust: the dust adheres to the oil. Two things follow that rarely appear in the sales copy. The first is that oil has to be reapplied after every wash, in a quantity nobody can measure by eye, and the usual mistake is to be generous. The second is where the surplus ends up — carried along the intake tract onto the hot-film sensor, which then reports less air than is genuinely arriving and has the fuelling adjusted to match. Sprint Filter's own comparison puts four-layer oiled cotton at 76.42 % retention against 93.13 % for this dry weave, which is the part of the trade-off the gauze crowd tends not to mention.
Dry means there is nothing to get wrong
Take the coating out of the design and a whole category of owner error disappears with it. There is no bottle to carry, no soaking time to judge, no risk of over-application before a long ride. The PM138S is cleaned with air and refitted in the state it left the packet in. On a bike bought for unsurfaced roads, that is worth more than a marginal number: it is one fewer decision to make badly, several hundred kilometres It is not a performance part either — the Milano leaves the airbox exactly as strong as it arrived — and the value sits entirely in what cannot go wrong.
Care and cleaning
Point the air line at the clean side and push the dust out through the face it entered. If the ride has earned something more thorough, wash it in tepid water with a mild detergent and rinse repeatedly until the water stays clear. Drying is unhurried and unheated: leave it in moving room air, never on a radiator, never near a flame, never in front of a hot exhaust. Refit dry, with nothing applied to it. Sprint Filter document the routine in the leaflet under Downloads.
