DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06320-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 245 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 95 N/mm
- Inner diameter 61 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 06320-31
- Free length 245 mm
Why the Rate Holds
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.
Dimensions
The 61 mm bore and 245 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 95 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.
Applications
There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Installation
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
