DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01099-31 is a shock absorber spring rated at 95 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 100 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01099-31
  • Measured spring rate 95 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 220 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 95 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
