DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21056-26 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 140 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 77 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21056-26
  • Free length 140 mm
  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 140 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

What Fitting Involves

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
