DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01099-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 01099-24
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
  • 110 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 80 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Fitting

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
