DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-65 is a shock absorber spring rated at 62 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 95 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00180-65
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 62 N/mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Size and Rate

The 46 mm bore and 190 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 62 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
