DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 58 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-13
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 102 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 58 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 57 mm × 190 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 58 N/mm.

Choosing 58 N/mm

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
