DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 44 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 44 N/mm
- 130 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Öhlins part number 00698-06
- Free length 230 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Installation
Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
