DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-27 is a shock absorber spring rated at 40 N/mm, 125 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 60281-27
  • Powder-coated black
  • Measured spring rate 40 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 125 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 125 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 40 N/mm

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Installation

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
