DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60182-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 37-49 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 180 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60182-05
  • Measured spring rate 37-49 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

The 46 mm bore and 180 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 37-49 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
