DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00181-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 110 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00181-09
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 200 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 35 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
