DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 34 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 133 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00698-01
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Measured spring rate 34 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

The Numbers That Matter

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.

What Fitting Involves

Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
