DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 66422-028 is a shock absorber spring rated at 28 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 66422-028
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Measured spring rate 28 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 220 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 28 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
