DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 21 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-17
  • Measured spring rate 21 N/mm
  • 130 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 220 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Installation

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
