DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01095-64 is a shock absorber spring rated at 160 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Free length 180 mm
- 78 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 160 N/mm
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 01095-64
Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.
Dimensions
Free length 180 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 160 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.
Fitting
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
