DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 61093-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • 70 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 110 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 61093-39

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Size and Rate

At 150 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

Installation

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
