DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21141-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 175 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21141-36
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm
  • Free length 175 mm
  • 82 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 175 mm and the inner diameter at 51 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
