DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-36 is a shock absorber spring rated at 105 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 21040-36
  • 76 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Measured spring rate 105 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 160 mm, inner diameter 51 mm, rate 105 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Fitting

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
