DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08744-95 is a pair of fork springs rated at 9.5 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 38 mm inner diameter. Factory fork springs are chosen for an average rider on an average road; few riders are either.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 38 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • 138 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 9.5 N/mm
  • Free length 240 mm
  • Öhlins part number 08744-95

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 240 mm and the inner diameter at 38 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

What Fitting Involves

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
