Here the black recedes and the blue becomes the only element with any weight, so the helmet reads as a dark shape with a highlight rather than as a decorated surface. It is the more restrained of the two by a wide margin. Blue is also the most practical saturated colour available on a helmet: the grey film a motorway day deposits reads as an obvious deposit against white and as a haze against black, and against a deep blue it largely disappears between washes. On a matt finish that compounds, because there is no clear coat for handling marks to catch in either. 🔵 The trade is conspicuity — a dark-based helmet is harder for a driver to resolve in poor light than a pale one, and that is precisely when it counts.
