DescriptionThe whole story▼

Of all the parts on a CB500F, the reservoir is the cheapest one to improve. LighTech's OBT001 holds 31 cm³: machined aluminium outside, clear plastic inside so the level stays readable. LighTech anodises the OBT001 in 2 different colours. LighTech lists it for the CB500F; mounting is straightforward and reversible.

Key Features

  • Anodised rather than painted, so a wash does not dull it
  • 106 g on the CB500F
  • Visible fluid level without removing anything from the CB500F
  • 106 g in place of the original box
  • Laser-marked with the LighTech logo
  • Made in Italy

The Case for Billet

A fluid reservoir does two things, and the factory part does only one of them. The OBT001 comes with a rubber gasket under the cap, which is what keeps fluid where it belongs. At 106 g it weighs about what the plastic original does.

Application

LighTech lists the OBT001 for the Honda CB500F. It is a universal article in LighTech's own description; the CB500F is the application, not the design brief.

In the Workshop

The OBT001 replaces an existing part on the CB500F rather than adding one. Brake fluid strips paint — cover the CB500F tank and fairing before you open anything. Re-check the fasteners after the first ride.

Looking After It

Fluid darkens as it absorbs water — on the CB500F that is now visible without tools. Beyond that the OBT001 asks nothing of you.

Supplied As

The OBT001 arrives as the tank, the cap and the gasket. Spares are listed under their own numbers rather than bundled.

Before You Order

The OBT001 is supplied without a bracket. Three mounts exist — OBT003, OBT008 and OBT009 — and which suits the CB500F depends on where you want the tank. Order the OBT001 together with a bracket and the CB500F installation is complete.

Regulations and the Hydraulic Circuit

The hydraulic circuit is the one area where a styling part stops being a styling part. The OBT001 is sold without approval documentation of any kind. Road use on the CB500F means two steps: clarify it beforehand, test it afterwards.
