The Naked Panigale V2
Ducati removed the bodywork, fitted a wide handlebar and retuned the 955 cc Superquadro to 153 horsepower. It is far easier to live with than the V4 version and very nearly as entertaining.
A Twin That Revs
The Superquadro's extreme bore-to-stroke ratio gives it a top end no conventional V-twin reaches. In the last two thousand revs it behaves like a small four and then it stops sounding like one.
The Menu Side
Modes, traction, wheelie control and engine braking, all reached from here. The V2 carries the same electronics as the V4 and the rider meets all of it through this block.
Three Anodised Options
Black, red and titanium, converted into the metal. On a naked bike the cockpit is looked at from outside as well as from the saddle, which makes the choice slightly less private.
Nothing Between Hand and Weather
No fairing at all. Rain arrives at the assembly at road speed and stays there for the whole journey, which a faired bike's controls never face.
Sealed Elements
Enclosed within the machined body rather than behind a clipped lid. There is no cover to lose tension and no seam for water to work along.
Ninety-Three Kilograms of Engine
The Superquadro is compact for its output, which let Ducati keep the wheelbase short and the mass central. On a naked bike that shows up as a willingness to change direction that the numbers understate.
A Seat You Can Reach
Eight hundred and thirty-seven millimetres, which is low for a bike derived from a superbike. It is one of several reasons riders who found the faired V2 punishing end up on this instead.
Not Chasing the V4
Ducati made no attempt to close the gap on power and concentrated on making the V2 easier to ride quickly. It is a more honest position than most manufacturers take with a second-tier model.
