A Different Sequence
Same controls, different order. The one a rider works most on a circuit moves to where the thumb lands first, which sounds trivial until it is missing.
No Attention to Spare
Braking hard from a high speed, the left hand has exactly one job. Any control that requires looking for is a control that will not be used until the bike is upright again.
Settings That Move
As a tyre goes off the traction level rises; as the track cools the map often comes down. Both are done from here without closing the throttle.
Twenty Minutes After the Flag
That is when a track bike meets a hot pressure washer. It is the single most reliable way to destroy switchgear and it happens after every session rather than occasionally.
The Original Goes Back On
Nothing is cut into the harness, so a bike prepared for circuits can be returned to road specification in twenty minutes without any evidence remaining.
Suspension From the Dashboard
The S let its Öhlins be configured through the display rather than with a screwdriver. Ducati was early to this and it worked better than it had any right to.
Data Logging as Standard
Channels recorded to a memory key with no accessory fitted. On a road-registered motorcycle in 2012 that was unusual and it says a great deal about who Ducati expected to buy one.
Forged Marchesini Wheels
Rotating mass removed from a bike already at 164 kilograms dry. The steering became lighter still, which on a machine this focused was arguably unnecessary.
Three Anodised Options
Black, red and titanium. On a track bike a finish is judged by how it survives cleaning and handling rather than by how it photographs on a stand.
