DescriptionThe whole story▼
The carbon panels on these bars are meant to be replaced. Akrapovic makes them 2.5 mm thick, and states plainly that the owner can change them if they are damaged — which is an admission that a protection bar's job is to be damaged, and a design that takes it seriously.
Key Features
- 3.02 kg, built from 25 mm sandblasted titanium tube
- Carbon fibre protection elements, 2.5 mm thick and replaceable
- ABE — the German general operating permit
- 10 mm laser-cut and machined flanges, precision TIG welded
- Around 40 per cent lighter than a comparable stainless steel set
- No restriction on lean angle
- Fits the R 1300 GS Adventure and works with BMW Option 719
A Wear Part That Can Be Renewed
Most protection bars are a single welded structure. Take a hit hard enough to scar them and the scar stays for the life of the motorcycle, or the whole set comes off and gets replaced.
Here the contact surfaces are separate carbon panels bolted to the frame of the bar. A slow tip-over in a car park marks the carbon and not the titanium, and the carbon can be renewed without touching the structure that did the work.
Twenty-Five Millimetre Tube
Akrapovic gives the tube diameter, which most manufacturers do not. 25 mm titanium at 3.02 kg for the set is roughly 40 per cent under an equivalent stainless steel construction, and the mechanical strength is stated as unchanged.
On the R 1300 GS — a motorcycle that weighs 237 kg before luggage — a kilogram and a half saved low and wide is worth having, particularly on a bike whose owners routinely load it past its comfortable limit.
Ten Millimetre Flanges
The mounting flanges are 10 mm here against 8 mm on the R 1250 GS sets, laser cut and then machined. Akrapovic fixes the construction partly to the chassis so that an impact is distributed through the bars, and states that the design was validated through repeated testing and deformation analysis.
The Adventure and Option 719
Akrapovic confirms two things that matter when specifying a new GS: the set fits the R 1300 GS Adventure, and it is compatible with BMW Option 719. That second point is easy to overlook — Option 719 changes cylinder head covers and trim in exactly the area an upper protection bar has to clear.
Extra bags and fog or spotlights from BMW and other makers can be attached to the bars as well.
Have It Fitted
Akrapovic recommends installation by a qualified mechanic, which it does not say about most of its parts. The bars carry load into the chassis, and the difference between a correct fit and an approximate one only shows up on the day it matters.
ABE, Stated by the Manufacturer
Akrapovic writes that this set meets ABE type approval. That is the German general operating permit: no individual inspection, no entry in the vehicle documents.
It is worth distinguishing from the EC and ECE type approvals that the exhaust systems in this catalogue carry. Those are European instruments; this one is specifically German, and it is the stronger position for a German buyer.
Lean Angle Untouched
No restriction, as with the R 1250 GS sets. A protection bar that grounds before the footpeg changes how the motorcycle can be ridden, and this one does not.
Road Approval
ABE, the German general operating permit, as stated by Akrapovic.
