DescriptionThe whole story▼

After a muddy ride, a Yamaha YZ250FX needs a thorough wash, and cross-country riders get to know their pressure washer well. What happens during that wash matters for the rear brake: pressure-washer jets, degreasers and the shine sprays used on plastics all reach the rear disc sooner or later. Accossato lists the DK168 for the YZ250FX from 2016 to 2023, a fixed rear disc made of steel, 245 mm across and 4 mm thick, which replaces the original disc.

Key Features

  • Fixed rear brake disc for the Yamaha YZ250FX, 2016 to 2023
  • One-piece steel disc
  • 245 mm outside diameter, 115.2 mm inside diameter
  • 4 mm thick; minimum working thickness printed on the disc
  • Six mounting holes of 6.2 mm on a 133 mm circle
  • Interchangeable with the original rear disc, says Accossato
  • No German ABE on record; for off-road competition

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato makes the DK168 as a single steel disc. The braking surface, a 115.2 mm centre and six holes of 6.2 mm on a 133 mm circle belong to one part that is 245 mm across and 4 mm thick. Accossato presents it as interchangeable with the original rear disc. As the source of its expertise, the company names road racing: Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3.

After the Wash

A pressure washer is the fastest way to get mud off a YZ250FX, and also the fastest way to push water past seals. Keep the jet at a distance from the rear caliper, the wheel bearings and the hub, and never aim it straight into the gap between pad and disc. Degreasers and chain cleaners do good work on the drive side, but they should not end up on the brake: rinse them away thoroughly, or cover the rear disc while you use them.

The bigger risk comes afterwards. Silicone sprays that make plastics shine, and chain lube sprayed with the wheel spinning, drift further than they seem to, and a thin film on the rear disc is enough to make the brake grab weakly or hardly at all. If a rear brake suddenly feels dead after a wash, suspect contamination first. Clean the disc with brake cleaner and a clean cloth; pads that have soaked up oil or silicone rarely recover and are usually replaced. After every wash, ride a short distance slowly and use the rear brake a few times to dry disc and pads before you need it for real. Once a month, while the bike is clean anyway, measure the disc and compare the reading with the minimum printed on it.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK168 for the YZ250FX from 2016 to 2023. At the front it lists the fixed DK268 for 2016 to 2021. The YZ250FX has one rear disc, so a single DK168 is needed. Before fitting, clean the hub face and check the rear wheel bearings, which a pressure washer tests more than any trail. Fit new pads with the new disc and give them a few gentle stops before you ride hard.

Road Approval

Neither a German ABE nor a type approval is on record for the DK168. Its use is off-road competition, the purpose the YZ250FX was built for.
