Most 899s are on their second or third owner by now, and a fair number of them spend their weekends being lapped rather than polished. That is the machine Ducati half-accidentally built: the Panigale a competent rider could use all of, and cheap enough these days to risk. Buying one used means inheriting somebody else's service history, and the air panel is the item nobody ever writes down. PM127S is a woven polyester element that hands you a known starting condition and then gives it back every time you clean it.

Session time is the only clock
A circuit day is not measured in kilometres. It runs in twenty-minute blocks with an hour of standing about in between, and every job you do to the bike has to fit inside that hour. Washing a gauze, drying it properly and putting the right quantity of oil back does not fit; in practice the filter simply stays where it is and the work moves to a day that never arrives. Blowing a dry panel through takes about as long as checking tyre pressures, so it genuinely gets done, session after session, on a paddock surface dustier than any road the bike will ever see.
What a used bike inherits
Nothing here will make a standard 899 faster, and no lap time is going to fall because of a panel filter. What changes is that the inlet restriction stops being an unknown quantity. A paper element records its entire history and hands none of it over: it silted up gradually, it never announced anything, and it cannot be brought back. Wash this one and it returns to the condition it left the factory in, which means the third owner rides the same intake the first one did.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, aimed from the clean face outwards, is the whole routine most of the time. When a season of paddock dust asks for more, wash it in hand-warm water with a drop of mild detergent, rinse until the water leaves clear, and let it dry in still air — heat guns and flames wreck the weave.
