How Öhlins Makes Them
Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
