How Öhlins Makes Them
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
The Numbers That Matter
Öhlins holds the free length at 250 mm and the inner diameter at 63 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
What This Rate Does
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Installation
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
