Manufacture and Tolerance
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Where This Rate Belongs
Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Installation
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.
Road Approval
