DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 230 mm
- Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 00698-34
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 107 mm of usable stroke
Manufacture and Tolerance
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.
Dimensions
At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Choosing 100 N/mm
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
Installation
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
