Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

Choosing 100 N/mm
Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
What Fitting Involves
Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
