DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 08791-60 is a pair of fork springs rated at 6.0 N/mm, 298 mm long with a 19 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.
Key Features
- Free length 298 mm
- Inner diameter 19 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Measured spring rate 6.0 N/mm
- Supplied as a pair
- 127 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 08791-60
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.
Dimensions
Öhlins holds the free length at 298 mm and the inner diameter at 19 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 6.0 N/mm
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Installation
Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
