MT-Helmets Thunder 4 R SV Fast C5 Full-Face Helmet – Matt Red

Fast C5 is a matt red helmet with black angular camouflage laid over it — layered wedges and repeated X-motifs running from the chin bar over the crown into the tail. It is the loudest Thunder MT builds and the only one of the four new colourways we have been able to photograph.

About the Fast C5 graphic

The base is a saturated red-orange, matt. Over it sit black shapes in two densities: broad angular wedges that follow the shell's panel lines, and a scatter of smaller X and arrow forms that break up the flat areas. The visor mechanism cover and the vent trims are gloss black; MT is lettered in black at the brow.

The pattern is doing something specific with the shape underneath it. The wedges follow the actual panel breaks in the shell, which makes a fairly full sport-touring form read narrower than it is — the same trick pinstriping plays on a car, applied to a helmet. Cover the graphic and the shell looks noticeably bigger.

The second thing worth noticing is where the pattern stops. The black shapes thin out towards the crown and disappear entirely under the spoiler, so from directly behind — the view a following driver has — the helmet reads as a solid red object rather than as broken camouflage. That is the right way round: camouflage patterns genuinely do reduce how quickly an object is resolved, and this one has been kept off the surface that matters most for being seen.

Matt over a strong colour: what you are choosing

Two things are true of every matt finish and worth knowing before you buy one. It cannot be polished: a swirl or a scuff in a matt clearcoat is permanent, where the same mark comes out of gloss with a mild compound. And red-orange pigment is among the least UV-stable in any paint system.

In exchange you get a surface that hides the fine handling marks a helmet collects from being carried by the strap, set down on café tables and hung off mirrors — and one that never throws a hotspot into a photograph. Store it out of prolonged direct sun when it is off your head, wash it with a wet cloth and never a dry one, and it holds up for years.

How long a helmet lasts, and why

Two triggers end a helmet's life, and only one of them is visible.

Any impact. The EPS liner works by crushing, once. It does not spring back and the crushed area is invisible from outside — a helmet that has been dropped hard onto a kerb or that took a knock in a fall is finished, however perfect the paint. This is the rule people break most often, usually because the helmet looks fine.

Around five years from first use, regardless of mileage. The EPS gradually loses its ability to crush progressively, the adhesives holding the liner to the shell age, and the padding compresses permanently. A helmet worn twice a year ages nearly as fast as one worn daily, because the clock is chemistry rather than use.

The Fast graphic across the range

MT applies the Fast pattern to more than one colourway. It is worth knowing if you are choosing between them: the pattern is identical, the ground colour is not, and the graphic reads very differently over a light base than over this saturated red. On this one the black shapes are the quiet element and the red carries the helmet.

Air through the helmet

MT enlarged the intakes for the R and reshaped the spoiler that covers the rear exhaust — the two changes that address the most common complaint about the Thunder 4 SV before it.

Both halves are needed. A helmet ventilates because of a pressure difference, not because holes exist: the intakes sit in high-pressure air at the brow, the exhaust sits in the low-pressure wake behind the spoiler, and the flow follows from one to the other. Generous intakes with a poor outlet give you pressure on the forehead and a hot crown, which is the failure most cheap helmets share.

Everything else that is fitted

A Pinlock DKS435 Max Vision insert comes in the box. The MT-V-28C screen sits on the MT-M-28X mechanism with tool-free MT-QVSS release and a locking catch; a shade drops from inside the shell; a nose deflector keeps breath off the screen; the strap closes on a micrometric ratchet; and the lining comes out entirely and has speaker recesses. Sizes run XS to 3XL.

ECE 22.06 · no DOT

The current European standard, mandatory since January 2024: 18 impact points against the 22.05's five, several speeds, an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil for rotational loading, and a Brain Injury Criterion ceiling. No DOT marking is published for the Thunder 4 R.

The Thunder name and SHARP

SHARP rates an older "MT Thunder" and "MT Thunder 3" at four stars. Those are earlier, different helmets — not this one. The Thunder 4 R has not been SHARP-tested, and we will not carry a rating across on the strength of a shared name. The only MT model in our range with a real SHARP result is the Track SV.

Cleaning a matt helmet

The single rule: never dry. Road dust is mineral and therefore abrasive, and dragging it across a matt clearcoat leaves marks with no correction path — matt cannot be polished at all.

Rinse or soak first with plain water and let the grit float off, then a soft wet cloth with no pressure. Insects come off under a damp cloth laid over them for a minute; scrubbing them etches the clearcoat, because insect remains are acidic and a hot afternoon does the rest.

What it does not have
