The ABS Control Matters Most
Being able to disable the rear ABS is the single most important function on this handlebar for anyone riding a 250 kilogram motorcycle on gravel. It is operated with a gloved thumb, frequently while moving, and it has to register first time.
Offroad Mode
KTM's setting cuts power and allows substantial rear wheel slip, which is what makes a machine this heavy manageable on a loose surface. It is selected from the left cluster and used constantly on mixed terrain.
Armoured Gloves
Off-road gloves have knuckle protection and thicker palms than road ones, and they flatten every subtlety a printed legend offers. Machined relief between controls is what survives that, which is the practical case for the part.
Standing for Long Stretches
The R's ergonomics assume the pegs over rough ground, which changes the angle at which the thumb meets the cluster entirely. Controls laid out for a seated rider sit differently, and a physical step works from either position.
Dust Sealing
Sealed elements inside a body milled from one block. Fine grit is what ends switchgear on a machine used this way, and it enters through joints that this housing does not have anywhere.
Impact at the Bar End
A loaded Super Adventure R goes over repeatedly on a long trip. The end of a wide handlebar reaches the ground first, and Ergal scuffs where injection-moulded plastic cracks at the clamp.
Black Anodised
A single finish, through the surface rather than applied over it. It dulls with contact instead of chipping, which on a bike laid down more than once is what actually matters.
