DescriptionThe whole story▼
This muffler cannot be fitted on its own. Akrapovic states it directly: the buyer must also choose one of two link pipes — with or without catalytic converter — or the Evolution header. Without one of those three parts there is nothing to join the muffler to the engine, and the motorcycle does not run.
Key Features
- A link pipe or the Evolution header is required and sold separately
- EC and ECE type approval, valid only with the catalytic link pipe fitted
- 1.8 kg where Ducati's standard silencer is 5.7
- Titanium outer sleeve with carbon fibre detailing
- Reaches 131.4 PS from a standard 129
- 4.5 Nm more measured at 6,150 rpm
- Half an hour of workshop time
Three Ways to Connect It
Akrapovic offers a link pipe with a catalytic converter, a link pipe without one, and the Evolution header. Which is chosen decides everything about the finished exhaust.
With the catalytic link pipe the system keeps its EC and ECE type approval and stays road legal. Without the converter, or with the Evolution header, the approval falls away and the motorcycle becomes a track machine. The muffler is identical in either case; the part in front of it is not.
Budget for Both Parts
The price on this page buys the muffler. The link pipe is a separate order and a separate cost. Nobody should reach the checkout thinking the exhaust is complete, and that is why this appears twice on the page rather than once in the small print.
Three Point Nine Kilograms
Ducati's standard silencer on these bikes weighs 5.7 kg — a large twin-outlet unit mounted high on the right. The Akrapovic replacement weighs 1.8. Almost four kilograms taken from above the rear wheel changes how quickly a Monster falls into a turn more than the figure alone suggests.
Torque Where a Monster Uses It
Peak power climbs from 129 PS to 131.4, which is modest. The number that earns its keep is 4.5 Nm more at 6,150 rpm — the middle of the range on an L-twin that is ridden on torque rather than revs.
Ducati quotes 115.7 Nm standard against 116.1 with the system. As with several exhausts in this catalogue, the peak barely moves while the area under the curve grows.
Two Engines, One Part
The 1,198 cc Monster 1200 and the 821 cc Monster 821 share a chassis and an exhaust route despite the difference in capacity, so one muffler covers both. The figures on this page come from the 1200.
Thirty Minutes for the Muffler
The muffler itself goes on in half an hour. Fitting the link pipe is separate work and takes longer, particularly if the standard catalytic converter has to come out with it.
Road Approval
EC and ECE type approval, valid only when the link pipe with catalytic converter is installed. In any other configuration the system has no approval and is for closed circuits.
