DescriptionThe whole story▼
Carrying a passenger changes the way a motorcycle stops. On a Yamaha XJ6 Diversion with two people aboard, more weight presses forward under braking, the fork dives further, and the front discs have to absorb considerably more energy on every stop. For the XJ6 range from 2009 to 2016, Accossato lists the DKS073, a floating front disc with a black carrier. Its friction ring measures 298 mm and is 5 mm thick, and the disc bolts on through five holes on a 150 mm circle.
Key Features
- Floating front brake disc for the Yamaha XJ6, 2009 to 2016
- Friction ring and black carrier as two riveted parts
- 298 mm diameter, 132 mm centre opening
- 5 mm thick
- Five 8.5 mm mounting holes on a 150 mm circle
- Interchangeable with the original disc, says Accossato
- Sold individually; the XJ6 uses two at the front
- No German ABE on record; intended for the track
Construction and Material Quality
The DKS073 is a floating disc: a 298 mm friction ring riveted to a black carrier, with a little freedom of movement between the two. Accossato gives the mounting data precisely, a 132 mm centre opening and five holes of 8.5 mm arranged on a 150 mm circle, and describes the disc as interchangeable with the original. Every Accossato disc carries its minimum working thickness in print, and the company notes that a worn disc under extreme stress can break, which makes that printed figure the reference for every later check.
With a Passenger on Board
Many XJ6 owners, particularly those with a Diversion or Diversion F, ride two-up regularly, and the bike copes well. The brakes feel the difference, though. With a passenger, the load on the front wheel during a stop rises noticeably, so stopping from the same speed takes more lever and produces more heat in the discs. Allow for longer stopping distances, especially downhill.
Smoothness matters more than force. A passenger who is not braced slides forward into the rider when the brakes come on suddenly, and helmets knock together. Squeeze the lever progressively, let the fork settle before adding pressure, and ease off gently at the end of the stop so the bike does not pitch back. Agree beforehand that the passenger holds on to the grab handles or the rider's waist and keeps both feet on the pegs at every stop. For regular two-up riding, check the front discs and pads more often than you would riding solo. Look for a raised lip at the outer edge of the ring and measure the thickness against the minimum printed on the disc. Accossato recommends replacing discs roughly every thirty to forty thousand kilometres, or sooner if they are worn, scored or cracked.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DKS073 for the XJ6 from 2009 to 2016: the XJ6-N, the XJ6 Diversion and the Diversion F, in versions with and without ABS, as well as the XJ6-N SP of 2013. It replaces one of the two original front discs, so a complete change requires two. The Elite-line DK077 is the alternative Accossato lists for the same years. Renew the pads when you fit new discs, and check the front wheel bearings while the wheel is out.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE or type approval for the DKS073 on record; it is offered for racetrack use.
Scope of Delivery
One DKS073 floating disc with black carrier. The second side of the front wheel needs a disc of its own.
