DescriptionThe whole story▼
When a highside is the last thing between you and the podium, the STM slipper clutch for the Ducati Panigale 959 (2016-2019) is the upgrade that matters most. Engineered from the ground up for track and high-performance road use, this unit actively prevents rear-wheel hop under hard downshifts, neutralises the engine-braking spike that triggers highsides, and shaves 0.7-0.8 kg of rotating mass in a single installation.
Key Features
- Patented ball-ramp mechanism controls the anti-hopping function precisely, optimising rear-wheel traction at high rpm and under aggressive trail-braking
- Eliminates over-revving on downshifts, delivering a stable, composed transition through every corner entry
- Significantly reduces the highside trigger impulse, a critical safety benefit when riding at the limit on track
- Allows controlled rear-wheel slide for confident, repeatable corner entries in sport riding
- Diaphragm spring design prevents pressure-plate flutter, giving a cleaner, more progressive clutch-release feel at the lever
- Weight saving of approximately 0.7-0.8 kg through a substantial reduction in rotating mass, improving throttle response and overall performance
- Better clutch engagement control mid-corner prevents unwanted dive, keeping the chassis balanced through the apex
Engineering Detail
STM's ball-ramp system is the heart of the FDU-S070. Under normal acceleration the ramps lock up the clutch pack for full, clean drive. The moment engine braking exceeds a calibrated threshold — on a hard downshift or a snap of the throttle shut — the ramps allow the basket to slip relative to the hub, bleeding off the excess torque before it reaches the rear tyre. The result is a rear wheel that stays planted rather than skipping, and a chassis that remains predictable exactly when precision matters most.
The diaphragm spring replaces the conventional coil-spring stack, eliminating the oscillation that causes pressure-plate wobble in stock clutches. Lever feel becomes noticeably lighter and more linear, reducing hand fatigue over a full race distance or a long sporting road ride. The reduced rotating mass also lets the engine rev and respond more freely, a noticeable gain on a motor as characterful as the Panigale 959's L-twin.
Track and Road Use
On track, the FDU-S070 transforms the Panigale 959's corner-entry character. Where the stock clutch can allow rear-wheel hop and mid-corner instability, the STM unit keeps the bike settled and the rider focused on the line. On the road, the same anti-hopping action adds a meaningful layer of safety: a momentary over-aggressive downshift no longer risks an unpredictable rear-wheel reaction. This is a component that earns its place whether the Panigale 959 lives in a race paddock or on demanding weekend roads.
